my myopia.

so.  if you've been with this blog for a while you may have noticed that I am a member of the glasses-wearing population [as seen here and here and here and in a number of Instagrams, for example].  I love glasses; I really and truly do.  I'm calling this the effect of having an optometrist for an aunt.  I've had glasses since I was a small thing - probably 5 or 6 years old; I started out with just reading glasses, meant to be used while reading and watching TV and using the computer so as to protect my eyes from strain and help prevent my vision from going horrible.  which makes sense in theory, provided you actually use them...HA.  I managed to send my vision down the toilet over the course of ninth grade, when we had just moved to Alabama and I had no friends and nothing to do and spent long hours playing games on the computer.  fast-forward to the first day of school sophomore year, when I realized that despite sitting in the very front row in Algebra II anything written on the board was just a fuzzy mess.

and so prescription eyeglasses entered my life.

I moved on to the contact phase around February of my junior year, partly because I wanted to be glasses-free for prom in March.  at the time wearing contacts made me feel really grown-up, which was an exciting feeling for a 16-year-old.  contacts certainly are convenient in a lot of different ways and for a lot of different purposes, but I'm still loyal to my love of glasses.  they're easy.  they're cute.  and they come in so many different options!  thank God my parents have awesome insurance, otherwise there's no way my collection of glasses could have grown this big:

that's right: SEVEN pairs with my current prescription [which thankfully hasn't changed in about five years].  plus an additional two frames with outdated lenses.  I'm a glasses fiend.  glasses work really well for me because in recent years my eyes have gotten a bit temperamental about wearing contacts.  about a year and a half ago [maybe a little bit  earlier?] I started having some dryness problems that often made wearing contacts extremely uncomfortable.  some days I have no problems; other days my eyes start burning after only half an hour.  I've gone through a couple different brands of lenses, as well as several different contact solutions and a whole bunch of eye drops, without much resolution.  so it's nice to just have glasses as a fallback for days when my eyes are acting up.  or when I'm feeling lazy.  or when I just feel like wearing glasses.

pssst: two of these are the same frames, just in different colors.

and now on to my next point: glasses are not cheap.  even with good insurance coverage, a new pair of glasses can run up a pretty high bill, especially when you start adding on things to your lenses [mine are always progressive with scratch protection, both of which are additional costs].  the lenses are the biggest expense when it comes to glasses.

one of the great things about our modern technological age is the arrival of online shops for eyeglasses, like GlassesUSA.com.   GlassesUSA is a great resource for those of you who want cute glasses without breaking the bank.  that's right - cheap eyeglasses.  while it may sound like an oxymoron, they do exist people.  and they're less rare than you might think.  GlassesUSA also has a fun virtual mirror feature that lets you upload a picture of yourself and virtually try on frames.  after all, you don't want to purchase glasses that make you look goofy, right?  you just need to know your prescription in order to place an order.  [fun fact: my prescription is -2.  so thankfully I'm not too horribly near-sighted...yet]

I can tell you on good authority [remember the optometrist aunt?] that if you wear eyeglasses, you NEED to have at least two pairs.  even if you don't wear the second pair very often, you need to have it for those "just in case" situations.  every time I see my optometrist here in Alabama, I get asked if I have backup glasses [I usually start laughing in response].  seven pairs works for my current lifestyle - I keep some at school and some at home so that I never have to worry about forgetting to bring glasses with me and thus having fuzzy vision for an extended period of time.  all glasses-wearers absolutely need a backup pair of glasses, and that's where cheap eyeglasses enter the picture.

if you're in the market for some new glasses [or that backup pair you still haven't gotten around to buying], GlassesUSA is offering a couple of helpful discounts:
